Pickering’s requirements

What Pickering requires

Pickering’s Engineering Services drawing P-1101, Tree Protection Notes, requires:

  • Barrier: snow fencing or a similar structure, installed outside the drip line of the trees before construction starts.
  • Groups of trees: fenced around the entire clump, with the area inside left undisturbed.
  • Inside the zone: no surplus soil or materials over the roots, no rigging cables in trees, and no contaminants dumped where feeder roots are.
  • Grade changes: where grades around protected trees will change, precautions such as dry wells and root feeding are required to the City’s satisfaction.
  • Removing a tree: if a protected tree conflicts with the work, written approval from the City is required before it’s removed.

FAQ

Pickering FAQ

How far from the tree does the fence go?

P-1101 places it outside the drip line. Your approved plans or arborist report may set a specific distance.

Can a protected tree be removed if it’s in the way?

Only with written approval from the City of Pickering.

Do you build to the arborist report?

Yes. We build what the arborist report states: the protection zones, the barrier type and any extra measures it calls for. Where the report asks for more than the City minimum, we build to the report.

Can you recommend an arborist?

Yes. If your permit needs an arborist report or Tree Protection Plan and you don’t have one yet, tell us when you get in touch and we’ll recommend an arborist.
