Oshawa’s requirements

What Oshawa requires

Oshawa’s standard is drawing 25-P604, Tree Protection Zone (April 2025). It requires:

  • Barrier: tree protection hoarding of heavy-duty orange plastic fencing, page wire, or 12 mm plywood solid hoarding, as shown on your plans.
  • Frame: 2.4 m steel T-bars driven at least 1.2 m into the ground, with pressure-treated 2×4 top and bottom rails, and the fabric wired on with #10 galvanized wire.
  • Groups of trees: fencing at least 1 m beyond the drip line.
  • Before work starts: the hoarding is inspected and approved by the City before any construction.
  • For the whole job: it stays up until construction is complete or the City directs otherwise, and the contractor inspects and maintains it.
  • Inside the zone: no construction, grade changes, or equipment or material storage.
How far from the tree?

Oshawa measures these distances from the outside edge of the drip line, not from the trunk. Trunk diameter is measured at 1.4 m above grade.

FAQ

Oshawa FAQ

Is Oshawa’s distance measured from the trunk?

No. Drawing 25-P604 measures the minimum distance from the outside edge of the drip line.

Does the City inspect it?

Yes. The hoarding must be inspected and approved by the City before any construction starts.

Do you build to the arborist report?

Yes. We build what the arborist report states: the protection zones, the barrier type and any extra measures it calls for. Where the report asks for more than the City minimum, we build to the report.

Can you recommend an arborist?

Yes. If your permit needs an arborist report or Tree Protection Plan and you don’t have one yet, tell us when you get in touch and we’ll recommend an arborist.
