Tree Protection Hoarding in Oakville

Barriers built to the Town of Oakville’s tree protection procedures, in place before construction starts.

Oakville’s requirements

What Oakville requires

  • Which trees: Town trees, private trees on construction sites, and neighbouring trees within 6 m of the site.
  • Timing: barriers go up before any construction activity that could injure a tree. The applicant notifies the Town in writing to confirm the barriers are in place.
  • Sign: a Town-provided sign, paid for by the applicant, mounted on the barrier before construction. It states that no grade change or storage of materials or equipment is allowed inside, and that the barrier can’t be removed without the Town’s written authorization.
  • Near stockpiles: where fill or excavated material is stored near the barrier, it must be a wooden barrier.
  • For the whole job: barriers stay in good condition until all site work, including landscaping, is complete.
  • Removal: authorization from the Town is required before barriers come down.

FAQ

Oakville FAQ

Does my neighbour’s tree count?

Yes. Oakville’s procedure covers neighbouring trees within 6 m of the site.

When is my private tree permit issued?

Once the Town has inspected the tree protection hoarding and fees and securities are paid.

Which private trees need a permit?

Trees 15 cm in diameter and larger.

Do you build to the arborist report?

Yes. We build what the arborist report states: the protection zones, the barrier type and any extra measures it calls for. Where the report asks for more than the City minimum, we build to the report.

Can you recommend an arborist?

Yes. If your permit needs an arborist report or Tree Protection Plan and you don’t have one yet, tell us when you get in touch and we’ll recommend an arborist.
