Tree Protection Hoarding in Hamilton
Tree hoarding built to City of Hamilton standard details PK-1100.01 and PK-1100.02.
What Hamilton requires
Hamilton publishes two standard tree hoarding details:
- PK-1100.01, Tree Hoarding: Streets. 1200 mm snow fence fixed to a 38 × 96 mm wood nailer on steel T-bar posts at 1800 mm spacing, located beyond the drip line.
- PK-1100.02, Tree Hoarding: Parks. 1.2 m Paige wire or orange safety fence on a wood nailer and 2.4 m steel T-bars at 1.8 m spacing. Located at least 1 m beyond the drip line where possible, with a 380 × 610 mm City tree protection sign.
- Both details: fencing must not be attached to the trees. It goes in before construction starts and stays until all work is complete.
- Public trees: removals proceed only once the approved tree protection is installed. Work affecting public trees needs an approved application from Forestry.
Protected trees
- City trees: permits are required for work that affects public trees.
- Private trees: Hamilton has no city-wide private tree by-law. Older by-laws still apply in Ancaster and Dundas, and a harmonized private tree by-law has been in public consultation.

Hamilton FAQ
How far from the tree?
Hamilton’s details place the hoarding beyond the drip line, and at least 1 m beyond it where possible in parks.
Can the fence be tied to the tree?
No. Both City details prohibit attaching the fence to trees being preserved.
Do you build to the arborist report?
Yes. We build what the arborist report states: the protection zones, the barrier type and any extra measures it calls for. Where the report asks for more than the City minimum, we build to the report.
Can you recommend an arborist?
Yes. If your permit needs an arborist report or Tree Protection Plan and you don’t have one yet, tell us when you get in touch and we’ll recommend an arborist.
