Tree Protection Hoarding in Markham
Solid plywood hoarding built to City of Markham requirements, ready for the Tree Preservation Technician’s inspection.
What Markham requires
Markham’s requirements are set out in its Tree Assessment & Preservation Plan (TAPP) Requirements. They call for:
- Barrier: solid wood hoarding, “continuous rigid and immovable”: ¾” plywood on a 2×4 frame, 1.22 m (4′) high, fastened with screws, not nails, and secured to the ground.
- Orange fencing: only where sightlines are a safety issue.
- Horizontal protection (where required): 10 cm of wood mulch under two staggered, overlapped, screwed layers of ¾” plywood. No OSB or particle board.
- Sign: 46 × 61 cm coroplast.
- Inspection: barriers are inspected by a City of Markham Tree Preservation Technician before any demolition or construction.
- Removal: only with the Tree Preservation Technician’s written authorization, with a follow-up inspection about a month after the building is complete.
Protected trees
- Private trees 20 cm in diameter or larger, and all trees on public lands, under Tree Preservation By-law 2023-164.
